About Berlin Tegel Airport
Berlin Tegel "Otto Lilienthal" Airport, located in
Tegel, at 8 km (5 mi) away from the center of the
capital, is the primary international airport in Berlin,
Germany. A hub for Air Berlin, it is also a focus city
for Lufthansa and the main source for business charters
in Germany.
What makes it so remarkable is the fact that its
hexagonal terminal is built around an open square,
allowing to reduce the distance from the aircraft to the
terminal exit to 30 m (98ft). Moreover, in 2010, Berlin
Tegel Airport registered over 15 million passengers,
occupying the first rank in Berlin and the fourth one in
Germany, as one of the most crowded airports.
Its aviation history began in the early 20th century,
when the place worked as a military base for the
Prussian airship battalion. Then, during both World
Wars, the space was used for military training, but it
was destroyed in the Second World War by the Allies
during air raids. Finally, it is here that experimental
rockets were tested, thus attracting some remarkable
aerospace engineers.
However, the airport is closing its gates pretty soon,
namely by June 3rd, 2012 when the new Berlin-Brandenburg
